Personal Statement

Ivan was awarded First Class Biomedical Science Honours in 2013 and is currently working as a medical technologist/scientist specializing in hematological testing of clinical samples in a notable Clinical Research Organisation. To achieve his career targets and goals, he is highly self-motivated, diligent and determined. His area of interest involves a combination of urinalysis, hematology, flow cytometry and laboratory management. His career goal is to be an ASCP Certified Medical Scientist in hematology managing a team that plays a crucial role in hematological analysis for the clinical care of diseased patients. In addition, he values the importance of knowledge dissemination through seminars/conferences to promote collaboration opportunities and create awareness. Passionate about learning new skills and an eye for opportunities for continuous self improvement. His sound organizational and time-management skills have ensured his workbench is always well-stocked, tidy and streamlined for efficiency to produce quality results.

1. Medical Technologist (Hematology) - Covance Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, Singapore (2014 - Present)
2. Medical Technologist (General Core Laboratory) - Khoo Teck Puat Hospital Laboratory Medicine, Singapore (2013 - 2014)

  • Confidently performed weekly and daily maintenance and Quality controls of Sysmex-XE 5000 Hematology Analyzer, CellaVision DM96 and SP1000i automated slide preparation unit.
  •  Proficient in manually staining PBFs with Wright stain and new methyl blue for retics count.
  • Competent in performing differential count and distinguishing RBC morpholgy and abnormal cells. 
  • Meticulous in identifying nucleated RBCs and calculating WBC correction. 
  • Confident in preparing thick and thin Giemsa staining of blood smears for detection of malarial parasites 
  • Adept in distinguishing vivax and falciparum species. 
  • Experienced in performing automated (ESR-Auto Plus® - Streck) and manual method of Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate.

  • Expertly performed PBMC isolation via BD Vacutainer Cell Preparation Tubes and incubated with fluorochrome-conjugated antibodies.

  • Performed flow cytometry (BD FACScanto II) and data acquisition with FACS DiVa software.
  • Performed post-acquisition flow cytometry data analysis on Flowjo analysis program.

  4. Hello - how can I contact you? I am curious about what happens to cytoplasm when blood cells burst. For example, when merozoites build up in a red blood cell causing it to burst. Surely this would cause cytoplasm to leak into the surrounding fluid?
